The act of playing a game is storytelling, and a game should give the player ways to make that story their own - choices, surprises, and generosity. Appeal to the heart!
Encourage the player to use central game mechanics with interactivity, reward, and granularity in the way they traverse the ingame space. Constantly remind yourself what the game is really about, and what makes it unique.
As a solo developer, understanding the reality of time and productivity requirements a project needs is key to being prolific - and a great way to think about designing to your strengths. That being said, making games is fun, and trying to push the envelope helps move the industry forward, too.
